Welcome to Murchison Falls

Uganda’s largest national park, where the Nile thunders through a narrow gorge.

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest, and it packs a lot into one place: open savannah with lions, giraffes and elephants, the mighty Nile squeezing through a seven-metre gap, ancient Budongo Forest with its chimpanzees, and some of the best birding in the country.

It is an easy fit for a short trip from Kampala or Entebbe, which is why I include it in my three-day safari.

Why Taj loves it

Why I love Murchison Falls

The first time I stood at the top of the falls, the ground shook under my feet. All of the Nile, one of the longest rivers on earth, forced through a gap you could throw a stone across. I still feel it every time.

What I love most about Murchison is how much variety it offers in just a few days. Dawn game drives on the savannah, a slow afternoon on the river with hippos and crocodiles, a walk through the forest to meet chimpanzees, and evenings listening to the park wake up around the lodge.

I like to take it slowly, with time to stop, watch and talk to the rangers, so you leave with more than a checklist of animals.

What to see and do at Murchison Falls

Game drives

Game drives

Dawn and dusk drives across the northern savannah are when the park comes alive. Expect elephants, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffes, hartebeest, waterbuck and warthogs, and with patience, lions resting in the grass and, if you’re lucky, a leopard.

Nile boat cruise

Nile boat cruise

A slow cruise upstream to the base of the falls is the highlight of many trips. Hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants drinking at the bank and a parade of water birds pass by, and you finish at the foot of the thundering falls.

Birding

Birding

With more than 450 species recorded, Murchison is a birder’s dream. The Delta is the place to look for the shoebill, and the river banks are full of kingfishers, bee-eaters, fish eagles and egrets.

Chimp tracking in Budongo Forest

Chimp tracking in Budongo Forest

Budongo is one of Uganda’s oldest forests, shady and alive with sound. Rangers lead small groups to habituated chimpanzees; watching them feed, play and call across the canopy is unforgettable.

Nature walks

Nature walks

Guided walks on the forest edge and along the river let you slow down: butterflies, monkeys, giant trees and the smaller details you miss from a vehicle, with a ranger explaining what you are seeing.

Be on the road early. The best light and the best animal activity are in the first hours of the day. Sleep a little less, see a lot more.

Murchison Falls FAQs

How many days do I need at Murchison Falls?

Three days is comfortable and is how my safari is built: a game drive, a boat cruise and a visit to the top of the falls. Two days is the minimum.

When is the best time to go?

June to September and December to February are driest and best for wildlife, though the park works all year round.

How far is Murchison Falls from Kampala?

About five to six hours by road, which is why I often combine it with a morning at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way.

Will we see lions and elephants?

Elephants, giraffes, buffalo and many antelope are very likely. Lions are seen on many drives but no sighting is guaranteed. That is wildlife.

Can I do chimp tracking in Budongo Forest on the same trip?

Yes. It can be added as a morning activity and it pairs well with the game drives. Tell me when you book so permits can be arranged.

Is the boat cruise suitable for children?

Yes. Life jackets are provided and the cruise is slow and calm.

What should I pack?

Neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars and a light rain jacket. I send a full packing list when you book.

Is Murchison Falls safe?

Yes. You travel with a guide and rangers, and I brief you on staying safe around wildlife.
