A Saturday Morning at Kitooro Market, Entebbe

The lake town’s busiest market is also its friendliest. Here is how I like to do it.

Most people see Entebbe from the airport road. That is a shame, because a few minutes away is Kitooro Market, one of the liveliest markets on Lake Victoria, and one of my favourite places to spend a Saturday morning.

Go early. Stalls of tomatoes, onions, greens and fruit spill across the lanes, and the fish arrives fresh from the lake. I always start at the same fruit seller, and I always leave with more than I meant to buy.

A few tips: bring small notes, say “Oli otya?” to start a conversation, and do not be shy about asking what something is. People are proud of what they sell.
