Ten Things to Eat in Uganda

Ten Things to Eat in Uganda

From matooke to groundnut sauce, a starter menu for hungry travellers.

Uganda’s food is hearty, simple and full of flavour. Here is a starter list: matooke (steamed green bananas), posho (maize meal), groundnut sauce, beans, a rolex, grilled tilapia, roasted maize, nyama choma (grilled meat), samosas and fresh tropical fruit.

The best way to eat them is with your hands, in company. It is also the best way to learn about Uganda, because every dish comes with a story and usually an opinion.

Everyone has a favourite way to cook matooke, and everyone is sure theirs is the best.

If you want to learn to cook any of these, the Cook With a Ugandan Family experience is the place to start.
